What's an indie artist?

In today’s music industry, an indie artist has taken a more relevant role than ever before. Major record labels won’t even consider signing an artist if they have not proven some sort of success as an indie artist. So what exactly is an indie artist?
An indie artist is an artist who is unsigned or “independent” of a major record label. This mean you and your team create your own opportunities, and obtain your goals with whatever resources you may have. It also mean you are in complete control of your entire career. You choose the direction you take as an artist, and a business. Often, people are indie artists in pursuit of a major record deal, while others make successful and satisfying careers without the need of a major deal. Either direction you choose, you have to adopt a DIY approach for your music careers.

The DIY approach does not exactly mean to do everything yourself. If that was the case, you, as the artist, would be too exhausted to fully create and carryout your craft. As the artist you should focus strictly on the creative process, and hire a music team to take care of the marketing, legal affairs, booking, etc. It is true; you may not be able to afford to hire all of these people in the beginning. However, it would be a wise investment to do so as soon as you get the ball rolling.

Speaking of affording and investments, money is the main challenge of being an indie artist. Without the support and backup of a multimillion campaign from a major record label, it can be difficult to fund several projects. This is when you and your team have to think creatively, and discover different ways to earn money.

Being an indie artist is a lifestyle of its own. If you really want to pursue a music career, you have to do it because you love it. There will be times you won’t be rewarded much, but if it’s your passion – go for it. A music career is difficult, but not impossible.
