Whether you are a professional or an artist in the music
industry, it is important to be well informed about the law and to have an
attorney. The following are the titles, URLs, and reviews of podcasts related to
legal liabilities in business:
These podcasts are by Mark Quail. He discusses the legal
liabilities associated with music publishing. This podcast is useful for all
producers, songwriters and artists in the music industry. He begins by
explaining several ways money can be made with music publishing. Then, he
explains the rights and liabilities that comes with music publishing. The
second part of the podcast describes the legal duties and music contracts of
music publishing. He briefly touches on licensing and agreements when using a
song for advertisements, film, television, etc. Overall, this podcast gives
great insight on how to deal with the business and legal affairs of music
publishing. He gives examples of drafting and negotiating a license for a song,
and how to deal with legal relationships to expose the song.
This lecture is by Professor Beckerman-Rodau at Suffolk
University. He discusses patent and intellectual property law. He also
describes different methods to obtain a legal title in order to handle such
legal matters with expertise. He ends the lecture with a “questions &
answers” briefing. You can listen to the lecture yourself at iTunes U.
This is another podcast by Mark Quail from his Music Law
podcast series. He first gives the difference between a personal manager-one
who advances the career of an artist-, and a business manager. In the podcast
he refers to a business manager –one who deals with the business negotiations
related to the artists –when he says manager. He discusses the legal aspects of
negotiating the terms of a contract between the artist and the manager. He also mentions the legal restrictions that a
manager has, the rights of an artist, and the “power of an attorney”. He also
recommends that each, respectively, seek out personal protection. I felt that
his podcast was very informative, and brings up important points when dealing
with a contracts.
