The recording industry and the
music business have always depended on marketing for the success of their sales.
In these modern times of Facebook and Twitter, it is easy to promote and
communicate with consumers. Any musician can communicate with fans by
themselves, and they may even feel that there is no need of an expert. However, Ariel Hyatt, an online marketer and businesswoman, stresses that without
implications of traditional marketing strategies, all the effort put in social
media websites becomes diluted. She states:
“The act of selling music is not at all like selling
goods or services which is where Internet Marketers have a leg up on musicians.
You are ostensibly selling a feeling. People connect to music in a very
different way than they connect to any old product, but that doesn’t mean that
we can’t take the same basic principles and apply them.”
If you are an independent label or artist, invest
in hiring someone to help you with marketing your music on the Internet. Do not
just hire them to work one time only on your online presence; make them a part
of your team/crew/band. It will be worth your time and money, and you will see
an increase in visibility, discoverability and sales online. Below is a chart
that Ariel Hyatt includes in her article to describe what an expert marketer
can do for a musician.
Corey Denis, a “genius in
marketing”, explains the importance of Internet marketing in an interview by
Ariel Hyatt. She states that we have to take advantage of the old and new ways
of communicating especially in the face of both and unstable economy and the
evolution of the new music economy.
It is important to have as a page
on as many websites as possible like twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Vimeo and
more! Create a personal webpage, and email newsletters to your fans. Use all of
these as tools to which you can market your music in order to build your digital
presence. It is important to dedicate as much time as possible to your profiles
in order to develop them and generate exposure. That is why I insist that you
hire an online marketer to help you; you will save and benefit a lot from hired
help. Lose the need to control, and leave it up to the experts. Remember, in a
team/crew/band there are many different roles including the manager, publicist,
attorney, etc. Your main priority as an artist should be developing your craft.
